More Singaporean families choosing to live in Johor, but it's not just about cheaper living

An increasing number of Singaporean families are choosing to settle in Johor, attracted by more than just affordable living expenses. For many, the appeal lies in having larger homes, quieter neighborhoods and a lifestyle that feels more relaxed while still remaining close enough to Singapore for work and family visits.

Over the past few years, cross-border living has become a growing trend among families seeking more space and a stronger sense of community. Many say life in Johor offers a slower pace, friendlier neighborhoods and an environment where children can enjoy greater freedom outdoors.

For parents raising young children, the lifestyle difference is often one of the biggest advantages. Residential areas in Johor are seen as calmer and less crowded, allowing children to play outside more comfortably and interact closely with neighbors. Some families describe the experience as similar to traditional “kampung-style” living, where communities feel more connected and supportive.

The larger living spaces available in Johor are also a major attraction. Compared to compact urban housing in Singapore, many families are able to enjoy landed homes or bigger apartments while maintaining access to modern amenities, shopping centers and international schools.

However, many families stress that moving across the Causeway is not simply about saving money. While some daily expenses such as food and housing may be more affordable, other costs can remain significant. International school fees, transportation, healthcare and commuting expenses still require careful financial planning.

Education continues to be one of the most important considerations for parents making the move. Families often choose schools that match their children’s existing curriculum to ensure smoother transitions and academic stability. For some households, educational quality matters just as much as affordability.

Another factor encouraging families to remain in Johor is convenience. Despite living in another country, many residents can still travel back to Singapore relatively quickly for work, family gatherings or special occasions. This close distance allows families to maintain strong connections on both sides of the border without needing long-distance travel arrangements.

Food, cultural traditions and festive celebrations also play a role in the growing popularity of Johor among Singaporeans. Many residents appreciate the wider variety of traditional dishes, local markets and community celebrations that create a more relaxed and familiar atmosphere.

At the same time, living across the border requires organization and flexibility. Traffic conditions, immigration checkpoints and commuting schedules all need proper planning, especially during holidays and peak travel periods.

As transportation infrastructure between Singapore and Johor continues improving, more people are expected to consider Johor as a long-term residential option. Still, experienced residents emphasize that the decision should not be based solely on lower prices.

Toward the end of the conversation, many families agree that the biggest advantage of living in Johor is the lifestyle itself. Beyond housing costs or shopping savings, they value the additional space, quieter surroundings, stronger neighborhood connections and family-focused environment that can sometimes feel harder to find in larger cities.

For those considering the move, the experience offers a different balance between work, family and daily living — one that many residents say has improved their overall quality of life.
